* The man charged with using a hammer to bash a woman on Wednesday night was on a domestic violence order at the time. Trevor Bugmy did not enter a plea to the charge of attempted murder and was refused bail.
* Seventy-five years ago this week, Japanese troops ordered Australian nurses to walk into the sea off an Indonesian island and shot them. Among the nurses were Irene Drummond and Vivian Bullwinkel from Broken Hill Hospital. The first official anniversary of the event was held on Bangka Island on Thursday.
* An apprentice aircraft engineer has taken to the air on his own for the first time after learning to fly at the Aero Club. Tate Banning was the first winner of a scholarship provided by the Radford family.
* Friday night's first T20 evening game at the Alma Oval was a big hit, although for one batsman the hit was of a much different kind. He was struck in the face by the ball very early in the match and taken to hospital with a fractured eye socket.
